Along the way, Maren runs into other eaters including Sully, a predatory father figure, and Lee, a wanderer who teaches her how to navigate her desires. Being compelled to eat people doesn’t make her less sensitive to the taboo against eating other beings. I was thinking the other day about personality integration, and this fits in with veganism perfectly. I think it was a wise choice to use the first-person perspective which made Maren a complex character.

That was the first time we had to pick up and move in a hurry, and I often wonder if my mother had an inkling then how efficient she’d become. Clint Worthington Flow of Consequence described the film as "an oddly sweet—presumably a little coppery, too, due to all the blood—alchemy of love and murder" and compared it to Badlands (1973) and Bonnie and Clyde (1967), with their tales of "lovers skirting human morality and forging their own sense of paradise with each other". All you can do is just quietly eat whatever you want to eat, eating whatever you feel is right to eat, what is fair and ethical and honest and compassionate. I think this is the kind of book where time and distance might facilitate a more nuanced reflection, however these were my first thoughts.Upset by the moral dilemma, Maren tearfully states that she needs in a minute and falls asleep in another room. Really enjoyed this book which I originally bought on Kindle but wanted a physical copy for my library display which is based around the films and projects of Timothee Chalamet.

That made me be able to relate to the feelings of guilt that Maren has throughout the book, especially because the people she tends to eat are those that start to get too close to her. Maren is like most sixteen year old girls, she wants to fit in, she wants to have a normal life, she wants to be loved, but unlike most sixteen year old girls Maren is a cannibal. Later on I got up again and wandered around the house, too sick even to think of eating anything, and when it got dark, I went to bed and lay awake for hours. My only thought that took me out of the book was that despite the premise of loneliness and hardship, things did slot into place a bit too easily for Maren, for example the letter explaining everything she wanted to know (I don't want to spoil it so keeping it vague). She was able to build the characters extremely well and focus on the relationships within the book to make an engaging story.A nurse hands Maren a letter that Janelle wrote to her if their paths ever crossed again, which concludes with Janelle's belief that Maren would be better off dead than living as a "monster".

Some can feel lonely surrounded by others, some feel lonely but find it comforting, and others are constantly seeking something to fill their emptiness. There were a lot of people who were preachers, a lot of preachers who were speaking out against flesh-eating back then.
